There are bands that become part of the furniture of a scene, and then there are bands that help build the room in the first place. Backfire! belong firmly in the second category. Since forming in Maastricht in 1994, they have carried the flag for European hardcore with a level of consistency and conviction that few bands ever manage. The Last Confession closes the book after thirty-two years, and thankfully it does so without unnecessary nostalgia or polished sentimentality.
This is still Backfire! as they were always meant to sound – sharp riffs, heavy groove, metallic edge and enough raw aggression to level a small venue.

Opening track How Strong Can I Be immediately sets the tone with surprisingly detailed guitar work before collapsing into stomping Eurocore weight. Means To Your End is the fastest and most urgent cut here, driven by a frantic pace and one of the strongest opening screams on the record. It feels properly hostile without turning into caricature.
The standout is Fallen Rebels, an anthem aimed directly at the M-Town Rebels legacy. You can already picture half the crowd hanging over the monitors shouting every line back into a stolen microphone. It carries the kind of gang vocal energy that hardcore bands spend years trying to write naturally.
Elsewhere, Hate To Break It and Shed My Skin lean into the PMA side of the band without losing impact. The latter especially works well as a closer, built around themes of renewal and survival that have followed Backfire! throughout their career. Considering the tragedies, line-up shifts and changing eras they survived, those themes feel earned rather than forced.
What makes The Last Confession work is that it never tries to reinvent the band for a final statement. There is no dramatic left turn, no bloated farewell concept. Just five tracks of direct, uncompromising hardcore rooted in the New York tradition but unmistakably European in tone and delivery.
For longtime followers, this EP feels like a proper goodbye. For younger hardcore kids, it serves as a reminder of why Backfire! mattered in the first place.
