This time we connected with Mark Searle and spoke about Mark being part of the Mod culture, smart-looking Perry’s, Mark’s BMX career and the future generation Mods and Skinheads.

Hi Mark! Thank you so much for participating in this interview with us. How are you?
I’m good. Thank you.
Back in the days
Where did you grow up? How was life back then?
I grew up in Kent in the early 70s. Then later moved to Sussex on the south coast, where I still live.
Mod culture
How did you find out about the whole Mod-culture? Tell us something about that…
I remember starting middle school and noticing everyone wearing Dr. Martens and having crew cuts! Then watching bands like The Specials, The Jam and The Selector on the Top Of The Pops!
What attracted you so much about that subculture and why?
I loved the whole Two Tone Ska sound. And the fact the band’s had a mix of black and white members. The whole message of being able to get along as one and just enjoy the music/scene together. And of course the fashion; Harrington jackets, Crombies, Fred Perry’s etc…It all looked so smart!
Do you think the spirit of the Mods/punks/skins from back then still alive nowadays?
For me: yes!! As I still like to dress that way. There is also a big scene still happening especially in Brighton. The Mod-weekend, Skinhead Reunion and lots of ska related events. It’s so good when you see young people at these events who have a passion for the old subcultures.
What does Fred Perry and the whole subculture around it mean to you?
It was a brand that defined my youth. If you wore Fred Perry you were either Mod or Skinhead!! So good that the “youth” still wear it today. If I see somebody in the classic Fred Perry polo, it just screams “subculture”.
Personal beliefs
A lot of people in the alternative scene feel like they have a message to spread. What’s yours?
I like to think we are keeping the whole subcultures alive for the older and younger generation, the music and the fashion.
I figured that you love BMX-ing and riding your fat bike? Really cool!
I was a southern BMX champ in the 80s and still love mountain biking today. I’ve always been into cycling in one shape or form. It’s a shame Fred Perry don’t do cycling wear!!
And how about scooters?
I do, but unfortunately never owned one!! Would love a 60s one but you have to have deep pockets to own one!!

You have a daughter, right? You joined the Mod-movement at some point, but do you think that there will be something similar for the younger generation? Or will the mod/skin/punk movement ‘die out’?
I really hope not. I see so many of the younger generation at all the events. They all get the clothing and attitude just right, probably passed down from their parents. I love seeing them and it gives hope for the future to carry it on.
What’s the most important for you in life?
My daughter!! Then my passion for the whole subculture scene. I’ve met and made so many friends through the shared passion!
If you could give some advice to a young Mark, what would it be and why?
I would tell him to never worry what others think of you. Be yourself, always be kind (you don’t know what others are going through).
Anything you would like to add?
For the younger readers: don’t be a sheep. If you want to dress smart and follow a subculture just do it! Ignore any comments, they will come out of jealousy!
And for the “mature” readers: please keep the faith and hopefully the old subcultures will carry on for many more years!
