The Casualties – Detonate

Just sharp riffs, gang shouts and purpose done right

The Casualties have been at it since the early 90s, and against all odds they are still standing in 2026. Even after the departure of longtime frontman Jorge, the band pushes on with Detonate, released via Hellcat Records, the label run by Tim Armstrong. It is a familiar setting for a band that has always stayed rooted in classic street punk.

From the first seconds, Detonate makes its intentions clear. After a short intro, the title track kicks in with a raw scream and doesn’t let up. This is fast, aggressive punk with gang shouts, sharp riffs and just enough melody to keep things moving. If you know The Casualties, you know the sound. The difference is that it still hits with purpose.

Tracks like ‘The empire falls’, ‘Ashes of war’ and ‘Streets of hatred’ charge forward on pounding drums and tight riffing. The rhythm section, driven by relentless drumming, gives the record its backbone. Everything feels urgent, with songs rarely pushing past the two-and-a-half minute mark. There is no filler and no breathing room.

Lyrically, the band leans into themes of division, frustration and resistance. Guitarist Jake Kolatis summed it up simply: they are tired of the current state of things. That message runs throughout the record, but it is not just empty shouting. There is a sense of unity running through tracks like ‘Now and tomorrow’ and ‘Few the true’, backed by well-placed gang vocals that avoid becoming repetitive.

The album also benefits from a few strong additions. Features from 1876 and Vinnie Stigma add weight without overcomplicating the formula. It still feels like a Casualties record, just with a bit more depth in places.

Detonate by The Casualties

Musically, there is a clear flow. The songs transition smoothly, keeping a consistent pace and tone. There are small variations – a breakdown here, a marching rhythm there – but nothing strays too far from the core sound. That is part of the strength. The band knows their limits and works within them.

Production is another highlight. The mix leans heavy and bass-driven, giving the record a rough edge without turning into mud. Guitars cut through cleanly, the drums hit hard, and the vocals sit right on top with that familiar snarl. It sounds direct and unpolished in the right way.

Detonate does not try to reinvent anything. It is a straight-up street punk record, built on the same foundations the band has used for decades. But it is tight, focused and delivered with conviction. For a band this far into their career, that counts for a lot. If you are after something new, this is not it. If you want The Casualties doing what they do best, this delivers.
